Musheer Khan becomes youngest Mumbai batter to hit Ranji Trophy final hundred, breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s record

Musheer Khan on Tuesday slammed a 255-ball hundred at the Wankhede Stadium against Vidarbha to become the youngest Mumbai batter to record a century in the Ranji Trophy final, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar.

Having taken a 119-run lead in the first-innings, Mumbai set out to bat again on Day 2 with Musheer and skipper Ajinkya Rahane braving a top-order wobble as openers Prithvi Shaw and Bhupen Lelwani fell early. The pair took the score overnight to 141 for two with both securing their half-centuries.

Resuming on Day 3, number three Musheer kept piling on the runs with Shreyas Iyer after Rahane’s dismissal on 73. Musheer reached his second First-Class ton in three matches in the 90th over. During the quarterfinal match against Baroda, Musheer, the younger brother of India batter Sarfaraz Khan, converted his maiden First-Class ton into a double hundred. He became the second-youngest Mumbai batter to achieve the feat, behind Wasim Jaffer.

Breaking Tendulkar’s record

Aged 19 years, 14 days, Musheer has now surpassed Tendulkar’s record as the youngest Mumbai batter to record a hundred in the Ranji final. A month short of his 22nd birthday, Tendulkar had scored twin hundreds in the 1994-95 season final against Punjab where he led the team to yet another title. Incidentally, Tendulkar was in the attendance in the stands during the day’s play at the Wankhede.

Mumbai have won the Ranji Trophy title a record 41 times across 47 finals and are poised to claim another championship in their 48th final. Meanwhile, Vidarbha are playing in their third Ranji final, having previously won in successive seasons between 2017-19.

The Khan family has been having a dream run over the last few months with Sarfaraz earning his maiden Test cap and Musheer representing India in the Under-19 World Cup. Musheer was India’s second-highest run-scorer in the U-19 World Cup 2024 in South Africa, aggegating 360 runs at an average of 60.00.
