Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga will miss the two-match Test series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka starting on Friday at Sylhet due to suspension by ICC.
The 26-year-old breached the code of conduct as he showed dissent towards the umpire during the third ODI in the series. Hasaranga in the 37th as he showed “ridiculed” the umpiring said ICC on their website.
The all-rounder was slapped 50 percent fine and received five demerit points for “breaching article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to ‘showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match’,” ICC wrote.
Having already earned three which were docked in the third T20I against Afghanistan in Dambulla last month. He was also suspended for two T20Is against Bangladesh.
With the offense Hasaranga’breached the threshold of eight demerit points, which, under article 7.6 of the Code, have been converted into four suspension points in his latest offense during the third ODI.” quoted ICC.
The four suspension points would equate to a ban from four ODI or T20I or two Test matches whatever comes first. If Hasaranga had not reverted his decision to make a comeback to play Tests he would have missed the first four games of the T20 World Cup 2024.
Meanwhile, ICC also handed a 50 percent match fee fine and three demerit points on Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis for “abusing the umpires while shaking hands with them”.
Could play for SRH
Hasaranga who was unavailable for a few matches in the initial stage of IPL could now join SRH. He was roped in by SRH at his base price of Rs 1.5 crore.
As per the IPL schedule announced for the first two weeks, SRH will take on Kolkata Knight Riders on March 23 in Kolkata. They will travel to Hyderabad for the tie against Mumbai Indians on March 27 and then proceed to Ahmedabad for the game against Gujarat Titans on March 31.
