What did Shubman Gill tell Ed Sheeran to ask KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan?

English singer Ed Sheeran recently shared a video of glimpses from his recent India tour where he shared a meal with current Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill and even played some cricket with him.

During the meal which was also attended by comedian Tanmay Bhat, Sheeran said that he was going to meet Shah Rukh Khan for dinner to which Gill, who played for the Kolkata Knight Riders from 2018 to 2022 before getting released for the IPL mega auction, cheekily replied “Ask him why he did not retain me?”

Bought for Rs 1.8 crore ahead of IPL 2018, Gill had risen to prominence with KKR in the very first season where he scored 203 runs in 13 matches at a strike-rate of 146.04. But later on he drew flak for his poor conversion rate while his strike-rate too came down as overall.

“The kind of bond I have with the KKR franchise is something really special to me,” Gill had said in a short-film titled ‘Love, Faith and Beyond’. “Once you’re associated with a franchise you would want to carry on and play with them forever… And if I would be able to play in purple and gold, I would play forever,” he had added back then.

Gill has gone on to be one of the most important players in the Indian national team while also playing a pivotal part in helping current franchise GT reach two IPL finals, one of which they won.

Meanwhile, in 2023, KKR CEO and managing director Venky Mysore had said that the team did not regret losing players who are now bringing laurels to other franchises, adding they made the decisions based on “available information”.

Festive offer

“There is actually happiness when we see some of the players we have developed go to other franchises and do well — Shubman Gill is an example,” Mysore had said back then.
