Rohit Sharma may not have featured in the Indian T20I side since the World Cup semifinal thrashing from England last year but the ODI and Test skipper may not be done with the format just yet.
In a recent event, Sharma stated that the reason behind him and the likes of Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja missing out on the T20 series was owing to workload management ahead of the ODI World Cup.
“At the moment I think it was made clear in the past that it’s a 50-over World Cup year for us. And for some of the guys, it’s not possible to play all formats. If you look at the schedule, there were back-to-back matches, so we decided on just looking at some players’ workload that we wanted to make sure that they get enough break time and manage them. I definitely fall in that (category) as well,” Rohit said.
“More than just going and enjoying, there is another reason to come here (in the USA). Because you know the World Cup is coming. In June, there will be the T20 World Cup (2024) happening in this part of the world. So, I’m pretty sure everyone is excited. So yaa, we look forward to that,” he further added.
Following the aftermath of India’s exit from the T20 World Cup in Australia, Hardik Pandya has led the side in the shortest format. Pandya is also captain of the Indian side in the ongoing T20I series and even captained the ODI team after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were rested for the second and third ODI.
The next T20 World Cup shall be played in the Caribbean and the USA in summer 2024.
